Stories That Teach
Gender Equality

Office of International Affairs

MCUT advances SDG 5 through the USR project for international cultural exchange and English literacy in New Taipei communities, led by the Office of International Affairs. Original English picture books introduce gender equality through stories, helping children understand respect for differences and the value of equal treatment.

Stories That Teach Gender Equality

The team created a series of books that connect everyday situations with character-based stories. Simple English narratives help children recognize gender stereotypes and explore diverse roles through reading and interaction.

International and local students work together in storytelling and performances. Role-play, situational dialogue and discussion combine English learning with gender education, allowing children to explore equality in a relaxed setting and learn to respect different gender roles and cultural backgrounds.

To date, the project has delivered 30 English storytelling sessions on gender equality at elementary schools and community libraries across New Taipei City, attracting children and their families. Feedback indicates that more than 80% of participants were highly satisfied and found the interactive stories helpful in understanding gender equality. Teachers also reported stronger learning motivation and participation when language learning connects with social issues.

Through original books and intercultural learning, the project encourages openness and respect for a diverse society. MCUT will continue creating stories and extending outreach from campus to communities, helping the next generation become global citizens who value diversity, equality and inclusion.

Personnel Office

Gender Rights and Inclusion Through CEDAW

MCUT aims to make gender equality and mutual respect part of everyday campus life. Each semester, the Personnel Office invites gender scholars and practitioners to share different perspectives with staff and faculty.

On two occasions, MCUT invited Weiting Wu, director of Shih Hsin University’s Graduate Institute for Gender Studies, to discuss equality and the rule of law. The lectures introduced CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and explored the distinction between biological sex and socially constructed gender.

Using the concepts of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC), participants traced the development of gender rights and examined protections under international and domestic law. The sessions emphasized tackling indirect discrimination and protecting minority rights.

Linked to SDG 5, the lectures encouraged participants to reflect on stereotypes and practice respectful behavior. MCUT will continue gender education to strengthen inclusion, human-rights awareness and a welcoming campus culture.

Fair and Inclusive Campus Sport

MCUT promotes fair, respectful sport without gender discrimination. Clear competition rules and careful planning ensure equal opportunities for students of different genders to participate and develop their abilities, building an inclusive sporting culture.

The university swimming championships and interclass tug-of-war encourage participation across genders. Swimming events use group divisions and fair timing to create transparent competition in which students demonstrate their fitness and skills. Sportsmanship and personal challenge help build confidence and interest in exercise.

In tug-of-war, classmates of different genders work as one team. They discuss strategy, share responsibilities, coordinate their efforts and encourage each other. This cooperation strengthens class unity and helps students experience the value of equality, mutual support and respect for differences.

MCUT will continue using sport and its supporting rules to create a gender-friendly environment where everyone can participate comfortably and fulfill their potential. These efforts bring SDG 5 into everyday campus life.
