Campus Sustainability Week (Sustainable Development Promotional Activities)
It has been 60 years since Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) was founded. Based on hard work and frugality, MCUT has developed itself as a sustainable university. On April 17, 2023, a week-long events about environmental sustainability were held. All our faculty members, staff and students as well as the residents in the community were invited to participate to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainable development for the environment. “Ming Chi Campus Environmental Sustainability Week 2023” was just our first step towards sustainability. In the future MCUT shall achieve the goal of 20% reduction in carbon emissions in 2026. MCUT also plans to achieve the goal of zero carbon emissions in 2043, hopefully becoming a model of environmental protection in the education sector of Taiwan.
The Sustainable Development Office (SDO) was inaugurated, announcing MCUT’s sustainable development and its social responsibilities in governing the university. Focusing on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the SDO promotes campus sustainability. The SDO is headed by Deputy President Cheng-Min Ma, who is responsible for planning and promoting various affairs of the SDO. He has established the “Sustainable Development Promotion Committee” to effectively integrate communication and cooperation across the administrative and teaching units. By doing so, both action and execution force of MCUT are strengthened.
To cooperate with the Higher Education Sprout Project — Sustainable Development Promotional Activities, the SDO showcased a series of sustainable development-related work and events promoted by MCUT. On April 20, 2023 (Thursday), a sustainable development promotion booth was installed. The week from April 17 (Monday) to April 21 (Friday) was set as MCUT Campus Sustainability Week. In 2015 the United Nations passed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, proposing 17 core sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the world to strive for. Particularly for the “MCUT Campus Environmental Sustainability Week 2023”, the SDO made advanced preparations. On April 20 (Thursday) posters were provided, and there were Q&As between teachers and students. Through a prize-winning quiz game, the integration of sustainable development into teaching, research, university governance and social services were strengthened.
The SDO also designed the games on the MCUT Sports Day. The game was about winning prizes. Visitors were invited to stick the correct answers to the questions. In this way, they would think about the SDGs- and ESG-related issues, and promote sustainable development to others. Referring to the 17 SDG items proposed by the United Nations, and taking ESG as the concept, the SDO designed the questions, and linked them to the current issues. Through the Q&As between teachers and students, this activity was successfully conducted. Those visitors who answered the questions correctly within a time limit were given prizes such as luggage scales, correction tapes, and other MCUT merchandise.
This event proceeded smoothly on April 20 (Thursday). It successfully attracted many visitors, teachers and students to take part in. There were interesting content of the game, or the easy-to-understand posters, as well as good prizes, which the SDO hoped that visitors would learn the concept of sustainable development from the game. In fact, MCUT not only tries its best to develop education, but also endeavors to promote sustainable development and green campus. This is also a key development project of MCUT. Sustainable development should be everyone’s responsibility. With only one earth, human beings should adopt sustainable development, no matter in economy, or daily life education. Then we shall have next generations to protect the earth together.
