An Inclusive Campus: Support that Reduces Inequalities

Office of Student Affairs

MCUT puts inclusion into practice through the Student Counseling Division, Resource Room and Indigenous Student Resource Center. Together, they provide a coordinated support network that responds to students’ individual needs.

Gender equality begins with respect. Starting with new-student orientation, 17 sexual-harassment prevention lectures help students understand their rights and protective legislation, including the Stalking and Harassment Prevention Act. Gender Equality Week uses film screenings, workshops and outreach booths to bring equality into everyday conversations and encourage respect for gender diversity and personal boundaries.

For students with disabilities, Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) provide tailored assistance. The Resource Room invites students and parents to planning meetings and recruits graduate students as academic tutors. It has provided more than 600 hours of tutoring and examination accommodations across 57 subjects. Support continues through campus learning, third-year internships and Individualized Transition Plans (ITPs) for life after graduation, helping students pursue their goals with consistent assistance.

The Indigenous Student Resource Center fosters belonging alongside academic support. Indigenous-language courses, community service in students’ home communities and cultural-season activities strengthen identity and cultural continuity. Career talks and company visits connect cultural knowledge with professional skills, supporting timely graduation and a confident transition to employment.

Listening in ISP meetings, encouraging dialogue about gender equality and valuing Indigenous cultures make reducing inequalities part of daily campus life. MCUT’s commitment to each person’s dignity helps build a more equitable and supportive learning community.

International Education in Local Communities

Office of International Affairs

MCUT’s USR project on international cultural exchange and English literacy in New Taipei communities supports SDG 10 by bringing international education to areas with fewer educational resources. At Dapu Elementary School, which serves a community outside both urban centres and remote mountain areas, international students share their cultures through English activities and multicultural experiences.

The project follows the principle of internationalization at home. International students introduce their home cultures, languages and everyday experiences through relaxed interaction. English games, simple conversation practice and hands-on cultural activities help children build language skills and intercultural understanding.

For many children, these activities offer a first opportunity to meet students from other countries. Interactive learning encourages curiosity about the wider world. Teachers report greater confidence in English learning and a growing awareness of cultural diversity and inclusion.

Bringing international culture and English education into communities narrows gaps in access to learning opportunities. MCUT will continue extending these USR activities to more communities and schools, supporting educational equity and social inclusion.

A Community Support Station for New Immigrant Families

University Social Responsibility (USR) Program

New Taipei City’s large and geographically dispersed new-immigrant population needs accessible local services. Public and private partners across 29 districts operate family support stations under the city’s service center for new immigrant families and women.

MCUT established a New Immigrant Family Support Station on campus to offer a welcoming first point of contact for families settling in Taishan. University volunteers and professional staff provide advice on daily-life adjustment, emotional support and referrals to relevant services, helping families navigate cultural and practical challenges.

Workshops and exchange activities also build understanding between new immigrants and the local community. These opportunities strengthen participation and personal development, reduce adjustment pressures and support inclusion and shared community wellbeing.

Mandarin Courses for International Migrant Workers

University Social Responsibility (USR) Program

MCUT’s USR program supports migrant workers through humanities education and vocational skills development. It responds to the Ministry of Labor’s initiative to retain experienced migrant workers and demonstrates respect for cultural differences and diversity.

The Mandarin courses primarily serve workers from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Practical lessons reflect their daily-life and workplace needs, covering basic numbers, everyday vocabulary and simple conversations. Scenario-based practice and sample-test exercises strengthen communication and adaptation to life in Taiwan.

Language learning also encourages cultural understanding and exchange. It helps migrant workers participate more fully in Taiwanese society and strengthens their ability to manage daily life and develop in the workplace.

New Immigrant Families and Children: Multicultural Education

University Social Responsibility (USR) Program

MCUT’s USR continuation project for the Northern Taiwan First Academy Corridor Museum supports SDG 10 through local action and interdisciplinary cooperation. Its four areas are heritage and traditional skills, urban renewal and environmental education, social support for migrant workers, and support for new immigrant families.

The family-support initiative also addresses the development and education of children of new immigrants. The forum invited teachers experienced in Southeast Asian heritage-language education and the New Second Generation and ASEAN Youth Development Association, which promotes cultural awareness among young people from immigrant families.

Participants exchanged ideas on heritage-language learning, professional development for teachers and multicultural support. Sharing experience and connecting resources strengthen teaching capacity, cultural understanding and cooperation between university and community partners.
