In the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) achieved an outstanding result by ranking 99th globally in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This ranking evaluates universities based on their overall impact in areas such as research, policy advocacy, sustainable campus management, and community engagement. MCUT stood out through its long-term dedication to local engagement and social responsibility, showcasing tangible achievements and international competitiveness in local connectivity, community development, and sustainable governance. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Taiwan’s technical and vocational education system.

MCUT has long been committed to cultivating local culture and has actively promoted inclusive community initiatives. One notable example is a design thinking-based curriculum led by the Center for General Education, which encourages students to engage in field observations, cultural interviews, and creative proposals. These efforts have contributed to the revitalization of the Sanxia indigo dyeing industry and the preservation of historical sites, demonstrating impactful and meaningful sustainable actions that embody the principles of cultural sustainability and community well-being.

In terms of campus planning, MCUT is dedicated to creating a sustainable living environment through green and inclusive campus design. The university features affordable and high-quality student dormitories and integrates pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, art exhibition spaces, and community-oriented walking routes. These features transform the campus into a shared, welcoming space for both students and local residents, promoting a two-way integration between education and the community.

In the realm of academic research, MCUT has recently introduced the Social Return on Investment (SROI) assessment framework to enhance the societal, environmental, and economic impacts of its research projects. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthening partnerships among academia, industry, and government, the university elevates the policy relevance and practical value of its research, expanding its social impact.

President Tsu-Hua Liu of MCUT stated:

Being ranked among the global top 100 universities in SDG 11 of the THE Impact Rankings is a strong affirmation of our university’s comprehensive sustainability strategy. Moving forward, we will continue to promote resilient, livable, and inclusive sustainable cities through innovative teaching, local engagement, and international collaboration, fulfilling the university’s deep commitment to society.

Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, MCUT remains committed to advancing education, research, and social practice, striving to become a model university for sustainability that integrates global vision with local action.
